In 1918, the chronometer manufacturer Deutsche Präzisions
Uhren-Fabrik Glashütte (Sa.) GmbH was formed in Glashütte, Germany. After a
difficult start, in 1925 the company split into two separate entities,
Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrikation Glashütte AG (UROFA), which made movements and
Glashütter Uhrenfabrik AG (UFAG), which assembled watches using UROFA movements.
This sale took place under the name Tutima Glashütte. In 1945 much
of the watch manufacturing of Glashütte was destroyed by bombing and the
remaining tools and machinery were removed by its Soviet occupiers. However, the
town of Glashütte began producing watches again in 1946, and in 1951 all the
companies were amalgamated into a single concern, VEB Glashütte Uhrenbetrieb (GUB).
In 1993, after the reunification of Germany, the company was purchased by France
Ébauches and in 1998, Switzerland’s Aureus Private Equity aquired a 51% stake in
Glashütte Uhrenbetrieb.
