W.W.I. Silver Military LONGINES 'MAPPIN CAMPAIGN' Watch. 1917

Genuine W.W.I. period, silver military type "Campaign" wrist watch manufactured
by Longines and retailed by the London jewellers Mappin. Dating from 1917.
Watches such as these were sold to troops during W.W.I. as private purchase
items.
Solid silver case with a snap-on bezel and hinged back and inner dust cover. Case signed, "A.B." (Arthur Baume - A director of Longines who had sole rights to the U.K. Longines agency), stamped with a British sterling silver import hallmark corresponding to the year 1917. Case width (not including crown) : 34.5mm. Case condition : 90%.
White enamel dial with with subsidiary seconds. Dial signed, "Mappin Campaign". Luminous military style numerals and skeleton hands (luminous paint no longer active). Dial condition : 100%.
Nice quality, gilt, 15 jewel, 13
ligne Longines movement (calibre 13.34). Signed "B & Co." (Baume & Co.) and
"Longines" (on back plate, under dial - see above picture). Bimetallic
compensation balance wheel. Breguet overcoil
hairspring. Movement condition (appearance) : 85%. Recently Serviced. Time
keeping : good.
The Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon S.A. was formed in the 1830s by Ernest Francillon at Saint-Imier, Switzerland and has always been renowned for design and precision. Famous aviators, explorers and pioneers have all consulted Longines. The company provided timers used at the first modern day Olympics in 1892 and has been closely associated with the worldwide development of sport timing ever since. It has been responsible for timekeeping at no less than fourteen Olympic Games.
