The London & North Eastern Railway was formed during the railway 'Grouping Act' in 1923 and ceased to exist in 1948 when it merged with the three other main British railway companies (Great Western Railway, London, Midland & Scottish Railway, and Southern Railway) to form "British Railways" (B.R.).
* It wasn't unusual for certain railway employees, upon retirement, to be allowed to keep their company issue pocket watches. In these cases the watches were normally stamped "Ex. B.R." (Ex. British Railways) which signified that the watch had been officially taken out of service. The "Ex. B.R." mark also indicates that the watch was still in use after the formation of B.R. in 1948.
