W.W.I. Period LONGINES / MAPPIN Wrist Watch. 1917

Silver W.W.I. period Longines wrist watch
retailed by the high class London jewellers, "Mappin & Webb".
Dating from 1917. Watches such as these were sold to troops during W.W.I. as
private purchase items.
Solid sterling silver, mid size case with a snap-on bezel and a hinged back & inner dust cover. Silver wire lugs. "Nail" hand setting button on edge of case at the 4 o'clock position. Case signed, "A.B." (Arthur Baume - A director of Longines who had sole rights to the U.K. Longines agency). Stamped with a British sterling silver import hallmark corresponding to the year 1917. Case stamped with serial number, "3330867" (matching movement serial number). Case width (not including crown) : 30mm. Case condition : 98%.
White enamel dial with black Roman numerals and a red number 12. Blued steel hands. Dial signed, "Mappin". Dial condition : 100%.
Nice quality, gilt, 15 jewel, 11
ligne movement (calibre 11.84N). Signed (on back plate, under
dial - see above picture), "Longines", "B & Co." (Baume
& Co.) and with the serial number "3330867" (matching case
number). Bimetallic compensation balance wheel. Movement condition : 100%.
Recently serviced. Time keeping : good.
The Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon S.A. was formed in the 1830s by Ernest Francillon at Saint-Imier, Switzerland and has always been renowned for design and precision. Famous aviators, explorers and pioneers have all consulted Longines. The company provided timers used at the first modern day Olympics in 1892 and has been closely associated with the worldwide development of sport timing ever since. It has been responsible for timekeeping at no less than fourteen Olympic Games.
