Sterling Silver SMITH & SON/LONGINES Pocket Watch. 1904

Nice quality, Swiss made, sterling silver pocket watch manufactured by Longines for the London based watchmakers, "S. Smith & Son" and dating from around 1904. This notable company was first started by Samuel Smith in 1851 and is still trading today as the world renowned industrial giant "Smiths Industries".

Solid sterling silver case with snap-on bezel, hinged back and inner dust cover. Bezel decorated with an attractive annulated design. Inside back stamped with a Swiss, "0.935" standard silver mark (higher grade than sterling) and with the Longines serial number "17044899" (matches movement serial number). Gold hinge. "Nail " hand setting button mounted on the edge of the case at the 1 o'clock position. Fitted with a bevelled glass crystal (slight surface wear). Case diameter (not including pendant) : 51mm. Case condition : 90%.

White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds. Black Roman numerals. Signed, "S. Smith & Son - 9, Strand, London - 57.51". Dial condition : 100%.

Nice quality, gilt movement positively identified as being manufactured by Longines. Jewelled to the third wheel. Movement signed, "S. Smith & Son - 9, Strand, London - Watchmaker's to the Admiralty". Longines movement serial number "17044899" (dating the watch to around 1904). Breguet over-coil hairspring. Bimetallic compensation balance wheel. Movement condition (appearance) : 100%. Recently serviced. Time keeping : good.

Famous aviators, explorers and pioneers have all consulted Longines. The company provided timers used at the first modern day Olympics in 1892 and has been closely associated with the worldwide development of sport timing ever since. It has been responsible for timekeeping at no less than fourteen Olympic Games.
