RARE Early 9ct Gold IWC Wrist Watch. 1911

Rare, very early, 9ct pink gold gentleman's wrist watch dating from 1911. This watch was manufactured by the quality Swiss maker, International Watch Co. (IWC) for the London based watch importers, Stauffer, Son & Co., and retailed by Aldred & Son, Great Yarmouth. Stauffer, Son & Co. was a highly reputable firm which was formed in Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland in 1830 by Jules Stauffer & Francis Claude. By 1860, they had relocated to London and in 1874 the control of the company was passed to Charles Nicolet. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, many of the wrist and pocket watches Stauffer marketed used movements supplied by IWC.

Solid 9ct pink gold case with hinged gold wire lugs. Snap-on bezel and hinged back and inner dust cover. The inside of the back is stamped with a full 9ct gold English import hallmark corresponding to the year 1911 and with the letters, "C.N." (the initials of the director of Stauffer, Son & Co., Charles Nicolet). The dust cover is engraved with the retailers name, "Aldred & Son, Great Yarmouth". "Nail" hand setting button mounted on the edge of the case at the 4 o'clock position. Fitted with an acrylic UB crystal. Case diameter (not including lugs of winding crown) : 32.5mm. Case condition : 90%.

Original, two-tone, gold coloured, engine turned dial with black Arabic numerals. Blued steel hands. Dial signed, "IWC" (faint - not easily visible on picture). Dial condition : 85%.

Beautiful quality, gilt, 13 ligne, 18 jewel lever movement positively identified as being manufactured by IWC. Signed, "S.S & Co." (Stauffer, Son & Co.). Capped escape wheel jewels. Screwed chaton set centre jewel. Bimetallic compensation balance wheel. Breguet over-coil hairspring. Movement condition (appearance) : 98%. Recently serviced. Time keeping : good.
