18ct Gold Fob Watch - Charles Wakefield (Castrol) Presentation. 1907

High quality, English made, 18ct gold, keyless wind fob watch presented in 1907 as a gift by Charles Wakefield, the founder of the Wakefield Castrol Oil Company. This was during his term as the Sheriff of London (he later became the Lord Mayor of London in 1915).
Solid 18ct gold case with hinged bezel. Once bezel is opened, movement can be accessed by releasing a sprung securing bolt at the 3 o'clock position, allowing the movement to be swung out on it's hinge. The inside of the case is stamped with a full 18ct gold English hallmark. The bezel is fitted with it's original bevelled glass crystal. "Nail" hand setting push button on edge of case at 1 o'clock position. The back of case is beautifully hand engraved with the inscription, "A Souvenir of June 24th 1907 from C.C. Wakefield Esq. C.C. - Sheriff of London" (Charles Cheers Wakefield Esq. County Councillor). Case diameter (not including pendant) : 35.5mm. Case condition : 85%.
White enamel dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands. The dial is signed with the jeweller's name "William Crow, Stratford. E.". Dial condition : 99% (small, very faint hairline).
Nice quality, gilt, three quarter plate English lever movement. Jewelled to the second wheel. Bimetallic compensation balance wheel. Movement signed, "William Crow, Stratford. E.". Movement condition : 100%. Recently serviced. Time keeping : good.
Comes with a period jewellers box.
This watch was presented as a souvenir of a visit to a County Championship cricket match between Essex & Middlesex held at Essex's ground, which at the time was in Leyton, East London. The jewellers from which the watch was purchased was based in Stratford, East London, approximately 1/2 mile from the cricket ground. The watch comes supplied with a copy of a page from The Times Newspaper from 1907 giving details of the cricket match.
