W.W.II. R.A.F. SMITHS/JAEGER LeCOULTRE "Time Of Trip" Chronograph Cockpit Clock. 1943

High quality, 'Mk.III' 8 day "Time of Trip" chronograph aircraft clock manufactured by the Swiss manufacturer, Jaeger LeCoultre and supplied to the Royal Air Force during W.W.II. by "S. Smith & Sons, London". These clocks were originally intended for use in long range aircraft such as bombers. This clock dates from 1943.
This clock has a black painted metal case
with three buttons mounted on it's front. The left-hand button is used to wind
the clock and set the hands, the right-hand button to start, stop and reset the
chronograph function, and the centre button disables the small hands on the
upper 'Time of Trip' dial. The dial is marked with alternate luminous numerals
and luminous hands (luminous paint no longer active). At the twelve o'clock
position is a smaller subsidiary dial which records the duration of a flight.
Above the 6 o'clock position is a small red indicator which changes to white
when centre button is turned, disabling the time of trip hands. The large sweep
seconds hand records the seconds. The back of the case bears the British Royal
crown with the initials, "A.M." (Air Ministry). The dial is in
signed in black (not visible on scan), "Mk.III - No. 1847/ - S. Smith &
Sons (MA) Ltd. London - Ref No. 6A/ - SR/43". These clocks are fitted with
a beautiful quality, gilt, 13 jewel, 8-day chronograph movement made by the top
Swiss manufacturer, Jaeger LeCoultre. Overall width of clock : 95mm. Good
condition (some wear and tear to paint on case - a small nick on top of edge of
the glass). Good working order.
