Scarce Silver LONGINES Borgel Case Pocket Watch. c.1902

Scarce, silver, early example of a Borgel cased pocket watch. Manufactured by Longines and dating from around 1902.
Sterling silver "Borgel" case (once the sprung loaded winding crown is pulled out of position, the movement and bezel screws directly into case in one piece). "Nail" hand setting button at 1 o'clock. Case stamped with a Swiss "0,935" silver hallmark (purer than sterling) and with the serial number "1274274" (matching the movement serial number) Case signed "F.B" (François Borgel - a Swiss company specialising in early dust/moisture-proof cases). Fitted with an acrylic U.B. crystal. Case diameter (not including crown) : 50.5mm. Case condition : 80% (flat spot on edge of case).
White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds. Black Roman numerals. Dial signed, "Longines". Dial condition : 100%.
High quality, gilt, 15 jewel Longines
movement (calibre 19.71). Screwed chaton set jewels. Breguet hairspring. Bimetallic compensation balance wheel.
Movement serial number "1274274"
(matching the case number). Movement condition : 100%. Recently serviced. Time keeping :
good.
The Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon S.A. was formed in the 1830s by Ernest Francillon at Saint-Imier, Switzerland and has always been renowned for design and precision. Famous aviators, explorers and pioneers have all consulted Longines. The company provided timers used at the first modern day Olympics in 1892 and has been closely associated with the worldwide development of sport timing ever since. It has been responsible for timekeeping at no less than fourteen Olympic Games.
