Scarce military type wrist watch with an unusual sterling silver dust-proof case case. Manufactured for the reputable London jewellers, "Winegartens" and dating from around 1925.
Unusual sterling silver dust-proof case. The movement is held by a nickel ring which has a built-in winding stem pipe and a snap-on back. This section fits tightly into the main sterling silver body and is attached by a hinge. The case is then sealed by a sterling silver screw-down bezel. Case stamped with a Swiss sterling silver hallmark, and the words "Sterling Silver". Also signed "F.B" (François Borgel - a Swiss company specialising in early dust/moisture-proof cases - at the time this watch was manufactured, Borgel was owned by Taubert & Fils). Fitted with an acrylic U.B. crystal. Case width (not including crown) : 33.5mm. Case condition : 85%.
White enamel military style dial with subsidiary seconds. Luminous hands and numerals (luminous paint on numerals, no longer active). Dial signed, "Winegartens - 145 Bishopsgate, E.C.2". Dial condition : 95% (very faint hairlines, a tiny nick out of edge of dial which is not visible - hidden under bezel).
Nice quality, nickel plated, 16 jewel movement. Four adjustments. Signed, "Winegartens Superior". Bimetallic compensation balance wheel. Chaton set jewels (jeweled to centre wheel). Movement condition (appearance) : 90%. Time keeping : good.
Fitted with leather W.W.I. style military strap (wrist guard can be easily removed to convert into a standard strap).
