Unusual Gold "HICKS" Cannon Watch Key. c.1876

Rare and unusual novelty gold pocket watch key made in the form of a breech loading cannon. Manufactured in U.S.A. around 1876 by the quality manufacturer W. S. Hicks.
Solid gold case (unmarked, but positively tested), stamped with the maker's mark, "Hicks" and with the patent date, "Pat. Aug.15.76". The watch key extend and retracts from within the cannon's barrel by twisting the end section. To the end of the cannon is attached the original swivel bale ring which allows the key to be attached to a watch chain. Length (not including bale ring) - Retracted : 39.5mm, Fully extended : 48mm. Good condition (a few small surface dings). Good working order.
