Original W.W.II. period, Royal Air Force Pilot's/Navigator's wrist watch made by the high quality Swiss manufacturer, "Longines". Dating from 1943.
Original alloy case with stainless steel snap-on back and bezel (these alloy case were used from 1940). Fixed strap bars. Inside back signed, "Longines". Back of case engraved with "AM" (Air Ministry), "6B/159" (Air Ministry's assignation for a pilot/navigators wrist watch) and with the serial number, "1228/43". Case width (not including crown) : 32mm. Case condition : 80% (slight scratching to back of case).
Nicely refinished matt silver dial
with black numerals and sweep seconds. Blue steel hands. Dial signed,
"Longines". Dial condition : 100%.
High quality, gilt, 16 jewel, sweep seconds movement. Signed,
"Longines" (calibre 12.68N). Compensation balance wheel. Movement
condition (appearance) : 95%. Recently serviced. Time keeping : good.
The Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon S.A. was formed in the 1830s by Ernest Francillon at Saint-Imier, Switzerland and has always been renowned for design and precision. Famous aviators, explorers and pioneers have all consulted Longines. The company provided timers used at the first modern day Olympics in 1892 and has been closely associated with the worldwide development of sport timing ever since. It has been responsible for timekeeping at no less than fourteen Olympic Games.
