Unusual gold plated, cushion shaped pocket watch made in Germany by "VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe" (GUB). Most likely to date from the early 1960's.
Unusual gold plated cushion shaped case with snap-on back. Inside back signed, "GUB". Requires replacement bow. Case width : 38.5mm. Case condition : 85% (slight tool scratching to back of case).
Silver coloured satin finish dial with date window at the 3 o'clock position. Signed, "Glashütte". Dial condition : 90%.
Good quality, nickel plated, 17 jewel movement with shock absorber. Movement signed, "GUB" (calibre 69.1). Movement condition (appearance) : 85%. Working order. Time keeping : good.
Comes with original box and paperwork (serial number on papers corresponding to case number).
In 1918, the chronometer manufacturer Deutsche Präzisions Uhren-Fabrik Glashütte (Sa.) GmbH was formed in Glashütte, Germany. After a difficult start, in 1925 the company split into two separate entities, Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrikation Glashütte AG (UROFA), which made movements and Glashütter Uhrenfabrik AG (UFAG), which assembled watches using UROFA movements. This sale took place under the name Tutima Glashütte.
In 1945 much of the watch manufacturing of Glashütte was destroyed by bombing and the remaining tools and machinery were removed by its Soviet occupiers. However, the town of Glashütte began producing watches again in 1946 and in 1951 all the companies were amalgamated into a single concern, VEB Glashütte Uhrenbetrieb (GUB). In 1993, after the reunification of Germany, the company was purchased by France Ébauches and in 1998, Switzerland’s Aureus Private Equity aquired a 51% stake in Glashütte Uhrenbetrieb.
