Large W.W.II. Waltham Royal Navy Anti-submarine Stopwatch. c.1943 (Case Back, Dust Cover & Movement)

Large, original, W.W.II. period Royal Navy issue, "Admiralty Pattern No.6" Anti-submarine stopwatch. Manufactured specially by Waltham and dating from around 1943.

Large chrome plated case with screw-on back and bezel, and snap-on inner dust cover. Timer starts, stops and rests by pressing the winding crown. Case back engraved with the Admiralty pattern broad arrow, the assignation "Patt.6" and the serial number "U169". The inside of the back is signed, "Keystone" (watch case manufacturer). Case condition : 80%.

Matt silver coloured dial with black and red markings. Signed "Waltham U.S.A." and "Admiralty Pattern No. 6". Dial is calibrated to measure up to 5000 yards over a maximum six second time period. Dial condition : 85% (some minor marks).

Good quality, nickel plated, fast beat, 9 jewel stopwatch movement. Signed, "Waltham U.S.A." (Calibre 16 '43-TA). Movement condition (appearance) : 100%. Good working order.

These stopwatches were specially developed to be used on board Royal Navy warships in connection with the "Asdic" anti-submarine sonar device. Comparing several readings from these watches along with the direction finding capabilities of of the Asdic apparatus allowed the course, speed and range of U-Boats to be accurately plotted. This information was then used to set-up and launch depth charges.
