Quality Porcelain Bust of W.W.I. Admiral "Sir John Jellicoe". c.1919
SOLD

Good quality, Grafton "crested" china bust of Britain's W.W.I. Admiral, Sir John Jellicoe. Dating from around 1919.
This bust is made from bisque china on a glazed base. The base is decorated with a printed and hand coloured design showing the flags of the allies of W.W.I. (Great Britain, France, Belgium and Russia) and is entitled, "The Flags of Liberty". The underside bears the mark for "Grafton China", which was a trademark used by Alfred B. Jones & Sons Ltd, Staffordshire, England. This company introduced it's series of Great War crested china models in 1919. Height : 137mm. Nice condition (slight fading to painted design, a small nick under edge of base which due to it being glazed over, proves that it was a small fault in the manufacture rather than later damage).
Sir John Rushworth Jellicoe (1859-1935) was Britain's best-known Admiral at the start of W.W.I. He was commander of the British Grand Fleet and led them in the famous Battle of Jutland. In 1916 he was promoted to First Sea Lord.
