Attractive W.W.I. French Military Plaque (Trench Scene). 1914
SOLD

Very attractive pressed silver plated W.W.I. French Military plaque dating from 1914.
The plaque is made from pressed silver plated metal, is backed with suede leather and is divided into three sections. The left hand section bears the image of two crossed French flags and the inscription (in French), "Army of Land & Army of Sea - Command of General Mobilization - Sunday August 2, 1914 - Campaigns 1914". Below the inscription are four blank panels for the various battles to be engraved. The centre section bears the seven flags of the allied nations and below, a picture of three soldiers in a trench, one looking through a periscope. The right hand section again has the crossed flags but with the inscription (also in French), "Peace Signed - Campaigns 1914-1915". Below the the flags is a space for the date of the peace agreement to be engraved, ending in 1915 (interesting as in 1914, it was widely believed that the war would be over within a year !) As with the left hand section, there are also four blank panels. Within these panels the following inscription has been very lightly engraved by hand in French (not visible on scan), "The 28th June 1919 - Versailles" (This is the date and place that the peace treaty was signed).
