Rare gilded sterling silver and enamel spoon presented by the Singapore Golf Club in June 1921 as a winner’s prize for the monthly ‘Ladies Spoon Competition’. This spoon was won by Mrs A. C. Smith who was the wife of the club’s Honorary Secretary. At the time this spoon was presented, ladies were not allowed membership of the club, but were permitted to play the course one day per week.

This high quality English made spoon is crafted from gilded solid sterling silver. The stem is decorated with an ornate laurel leaf design and terminates in a shield in the form of the coat of arms of the Singapore Golf Club, decorated in blue and white enamel. The bowl is stamped with a full English (Birmingham) sterling silver hallmark corresponding to the year 1920 and with the maker’s initials, “J.A.R.” (J. A. Restall & Co., Cambridge St, Birmingham). The reverse of the shield is beautifully hand engraved with inscription, “June 1921 – Mrs A.C. Smith”. Overall length: 126mm. Very good condition.

The Singapore Golf Club established the first golf course in Singapore and was opened by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Cecil Clementi Smith in June 1891. It was located at the race course (now Farrer Park) and in 1924 it moved to Bukit Timah. In 1938 King George VI became the patron of the club and from then on it was known as the Royal Singapore Golf Club. In 1962 it merged with the Island Club, forming The Singapore Island Country Club.
