An
English made ‘Jahncke’s Patent’ vesta case made for the match manufacturer,
Bryant & May and decorated with a rare early cycling scene. Dating from the
1890s.
This very
interesting vesta case (match safe) is made from steel. The hinged lid is
decorated with an image of three racing cyclists on early safety bicycles.
Surrounding this are the national symbols of England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales
(rose, thistle, shamrock & Prince of Wales’ feathers). The sides are marked, “Jahncke’s
Patent” and the underside has a perforated striking surface. Surrounding this
are the words, “Bryant & May’s Wax Vestas – Made in England”. Width: 47mm. Good
condition (some ageing and wear commensurate with its age and purpose).
