Original commemorative mug with an interesting naval design, made as a souvenir of the coronation of King George V in 1911. Retailed by William Whiteley, London and believed to have been manufactured by Aynsley.

The front of this mug is decorated with an attractive transfer design depicting King George V and Queen Mary. They are surrounded by laurel and flower wreaths, the kings crown, the date, "1911" and two hand painted flags (the royal standard and the union jack). Below is the caption, "Coronation - King George V - Queen Mary".  To the left of this is an image of an early Royal Navy battleship, with the caption, "Battleship. George I" (as there was no such vessel, it is likely that the ship depicted is the HMS Royal George). On the opposite side of the mug is an image of another battleship, the HMS King George V and above it the caption, "Dreadnought. George V". The rim and handle is embellished with gilding (some wear). The base bears the retailer's trade mark, "William Whiteley - Universal Provider - Westbourne Grove - London W." and the registered design number, "Reg No. 574396" (dating the design to November 1910). Length of mug: 82mm. Diameter (not including handle): 85mm. Very good condition (no damage).

George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert) was born on 3 June 1865 and was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910, through World War I (1914–1918) until his death in 1936. He was crowned on the 23rd of June 1911 and was the first British monarch of the House of Windsor, which he created from the British branch of the German House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

HMS Royal George (originally named HMS Royal Charles) was a 100-gun First rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Portsmouth Dockyard and launched in March 1673. Throughout her life, she was rebuilt three times. The first time was in 1693 when she was renamed HMS Queen, then again in 1715, this time renamed HMS Royal George, and last of all in 1756 when she was finally renamed HMS Royal Anne. The ship was broken up in 1767.

HMS King George V was a 23,400 tonne 'King George V-class' dreadnought battleship which was launched in 1911. During W.W.I. she took part in the Battle of Jutland, being the lead ship of the 1st Division of the 2nd Battle Squadron. She was decommissioned in 1919, used as a training ship between 1923-26 and scrapped in 1926.
