Very rare, solid 9ct gold and enamel sweetheart brooch almost certainly made as a souvenir of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Brooches such as these were known as “sweethearts” as they were purchased by servicemen to give to their loved ones.

This nice quality, attractive and detailed brooch is made from solid 9ct gold, is decorated in enamel and is of typical Victorian construction. The brooch is in the form of Zulu weapons as were used in the war: an Umbumbuluzo (war shield), an Assegai (short stabbing spear), a Knobkerrie (war club). It is also embellished with a gold nugget and fine gold rope, which is entwined around the brooch. The reverse of the shield is stamped, "9ct". Overall length: 43mm. Very good condition. Supplied with a nice quality vintage style presentation box.

The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 in South Africa between the British Empire and the Zulu Empire. The war is notable for several famous and particularly bloody battles, including Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. The war ended the Zulu nation's independence.
