Scarce, early, high quality cyclometer made in USA by the New York Standard Watch Co. around 1895. A cyclometer records the distance a cycle has travelled and this model is designed to bolt onto the front fork of a bicycle with 28 inch wheels.
This cyclometer has a nickel plated brass
case and is still fitted with its original bevelled glass. Mounted on top of the
case is a protruding stem housing a 'star' shaped mechanism
which is designed to mesh with an appropriate
stud fixed to a wheel spoke. The white enamel dial is signed, "New
York Standard Watch Co." and has an outer chapter with 100th of a mile
divisions. A blued steel indicator rotates around the circumference of the dial
and registers against the chapter (1 mile for each complete rotation). In the
centre of the dial are three windows which indicate the total number of miles
travelled (hundreds, tens and units). The back of the case is stamped, 28"
(indicating that the cyclometer is designed to be used with a bicycle with 28
inch wheels). The cyclometer is still fitted with its original adjustable nickel
plated steel bracket which enables the instrument to be bolted on a cycle's
front fork (some wear to plating). Diameter of case (not including stem) : 52mm.
Nice condition. Good working order.
The New York Standard Watch Company was formed in 1885 and their first factory was located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The company produced good quality pocket watches as well as cyclometers. In 1903 the company was sold to the Keystone Case Company (watch case manufacturers) and continued until 1929.
