Very rare, superb quality, solid 15ct gold lapel
pin / brooch
made as a precise replica of a 'Trotman's' pattern anchor (with its stock
folded). Manufactured approximately 1860.
15ct was a British gold standard which was used
between 1854 and 1931. This
beautifully
crafted, highly detailed brooch is still fitted with it’s original gold ‘stile’ type pin. It is marked “15ct” and the reverse is
professionally hand engraved with the inscription, “From Dear Old Billy”. Length :
38mm. Excellent condition. Comes with a period
jeweller's case.
The Trotman
anchor was designed by John Trotman and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of
1851. The following year a committee was appointed by the Admiralty to consider
and report upon various anchor designs. There were eight different designs
competing and after extensive testing, Trotman's was considered to be the best.
However, it was not adopted by the Royal Navy, but was used on board
Queen Victoria's Royal yacht, 'HMY Victoria and Albert II' and on Brunel's
famous ship, the
the 'SS
Great Eastern'. Inventory No. O-15
