Rare Victorian, English sterling silver cycle racing trophy presented to the well known British cyclist, A.F. Ilsley on his winning the Stanley Cycling Club's 10 Miles Bicycle Championship. Dating from 1898.

This exceptionally attractive trophy is made from solid sterling silver and is beautifully decorated with an elaborate design. This incorporates a central cartouche which bears the image of a two men racing penny farthings, and is supported either side by athletes, one holding a starting pistol, the other a ball. The reverse is professionally hand engraved with the inscription, "Stanley Cycling Club - 10 Miles Bicycle Championship - Won By A.F. Ilsley". The trophy  is also stamped with the silversmiths initials "E.C." and with a full English sterling silver hallmark corresponding to the year 1898. Overall height : 345mm. Weight : approx. 345g (22.9oz). Nice condition. Comes with copies of pages from period cycling publications referring to Ilsley (see above).

A.F. Ilsley  and his brother R.J. Ilsley were prominent English competition cyclists in the late 19th century who belonged to both the Stanley Cycling Club and the North Road Cycling Club.  A.F. Ilsley later wrote for Bicycling News.

The Stanley Cycling Club was based near Wakefield, West Yorkshire and was one of the first cycling clubs to be formed in the U.K.
