W.W.I. Silver Canadian 'XXVII (City of Winnipeg)' Battalion Sweetheart Brooch

Original, W.W.I. period, solid sterling silver and enamel, Canadian '27th (City of Winnipeg) Battalion sweetheart brooch. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by servicemen to give to their loved ones.
The front of this attractive bar brooch bears a miniature representation of the battalion's badge and is decorated with red and blue enamel. The reverse is stamped with a "Sterling" silver mark and with the maker's initials, "G.A &S" (George Atkins & Son, Birmingham). Overall length : 48mm. Nice condition. Comes with a modern jewellers box.
The XXVII (City of Winnipeg) Battalion was formed in Canada in early 1915 and formed part of the 6th Brigade, 2nd Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They were sent to the Western Front in France in September 1915. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the 27th Battalion during W.W.I. In March 1920, they became the 1st (City of Winnipeg) Battalion, The Manitoba Regiment.
