Rare Wooden 'Trench Art' Model - British E.5. Submarine. c.1914

Rare, original W.W.I. period wooden 'trench art' half model of the British E-Class submarine, E5.
This 'half model' is nicely hand carved from oak, has brass fittings and is mounted on a mahogany plaque. Overall width : 293mm. Good condition.
The E-5 was one of the Royal Navy's E-Class submarines which was an improved version of the D-Class. The E5 was laid down in 1911, built by Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness and was commissioned in 1913. Shortly after her engines exploded which killed three and injured nine of her crew. During W.W.I. she served as part of the 8th Flotilla and took part in the Battle of Heligoland. On 7th March 1916 she went missing (believed sunk by a mine).
