Scarce L. V. Aronson "Gobbo" Car Mascot. c.1909

Scarce, unusual early car mascot made in Newark, U.S.A by L. V. Aronson's "Art Metal Works". Dating from around 1909.
This amusing gilt metal mascot is made in the form of a smiling impish character sitting cross-legged on plinth. The base bears the caption, "I'm Gobbo, God Of Good Luck". The side of his leg bears the maker's mark, "Copyright by L. V. Aronson - March 1909". Currently mounted on a bakelite base. Height (not including base) : 97mm. Good condition (some surface wear and tear).
Louis V. Aronson formed the Art Metal works in New York in 1886 and in 1887 moved to Newark, New Jersey. The company produced a wide range of objects, some examples being, statues, book ends, electric lamps and automobile mascots. In 1910 the Art Metal Works produced it's first cigarette lighter and from this date they gradually moved toward producing smoking related items. The company later changed it's name to the Ronson Corporation which is still thriving today.
