French 'Stop-Fire' Fire Extinguisher. 1920s

Unusual French made fire extinguisher specially
designed for motor vehicles. Dating from the 1920s. This nice quality extinguisher was
made by the French manufacturer, Stop-Fire (Paris) specifically to be carried
on-board motor cars. It has a nickel plated cylindrical case with a sprung
trigger operating mechanism (slight oxidisation to steel spring). The front has
an applied shield bearing the manufacturers name and operating instructions:
"Stop Fire - Paris - Extincteur pour Automobiles - Fonctionnement - Appuyer bien
a fond sur la gachette en dirigeant le jet sur la base des flammes" (Stop Fire -
Paris - Extinguisher for Automobiles - Operation - Press down trigger while
directing jet on the base of the flames). The base is stamped with the serial
number, "160684". The extinguisher comes with its original aluminium canister,
the underside being stamped with the maker's name, "Ets L.Berlan - Paris". Its
lid displays the maker's name and is also decorated with an attractive image of
St Christopher surrounded by the caption, highlighted in red, "Regarde
St. Christophe - Puis Va-T-En Rassure" (Look at St. Christopher - Then go
in Reassurance). The extinguisher also comes with its original instruction sheet
(which is stored within the canister). Overall extinguisher length: 180mm.
Canister length & diameter: 190mm & 45mm dia. The extinguisher is empty and is
in nice condition (a couple of blemishes to plating). The canister is also in good
condition, showing only light wear.
