Very nice, period, German made tin-plate model of the famous Mercedes W196R 'Streamliner' racing car, possibly made my JNF (Josef Neuhierl, Fürth). Dating from around 1955.
This nice quality model has a sturdy, red painted tinplate body with a litho printed interior. It has a thin clear plastic windscreen (possibly a replacement?) and nickel plated wheels, which are still fitted with their original rubber tyres. It incorporates a moveable steering mechanism (operated by the steering wheel) and a friction operated motor (in need of some attention). The underside is stamped, "Made in Western Germany". Good condition (some minor wear to paint, commensurate with age and purpose). Length: approx 270mm.
The successful Mercedes W 196 R 'Streamliner' (also known as the 'Type Monza') was an aerodynamic version of the open-wheeled W196 'Monoposto' and was raced during the 1954 & 55 Grand Prix seasons. It first appeared at the 1954 French Grand Prix in Reims where three examples were driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, Karl Kling & Hans Hermann. Fangio & Kling finished in 1st and 2nd place and Hermann posted the fastest lap. The car later appeared at the Monza circuit where it earned it nickname. The W196R went on to win 9 out of its 12 races at the hands of Fangio and Stirling Moss.
