The Delage Automobile Company was established in 1905, Paris, France by Louis Delâge. By 1908 the company was competing in Grand Prix motor racing and was soon winning important races. During W.W.I. the company’s factory was converted to military production.
After the war, the company prospered, producing high quality, well-engineered touring and luxury saloon cars and in the mid 1920s, Delage dominated Grand Prix racing, winning the British, French, Spanish and Italian Grand Prix races. In 1924, the French driver, René Thomas set a new land speed record of 143 mph driving the 10 litre V12 Delage “La Torpille”.
In 1935, during the Great Depression, the company went into voluntary liquidation. A license to manufacture cars under the Delage name was negotiated with the Delahaye automobile company and continued in production until 1953.
