Scarce Early Royal Automobile Club of South Africa Car Badge. c.1915
SOLD

Scarce, early example of a Royal Automobile Club of South Africa car badge. First pattern, dating from around 1915. Low issue number.
This good quality badge is made from solid nickel and at sometime in the past has been lightly plated. Like the British version, this badge is in the form of a wheel supported by the god Mercury. Above the wheel is the King's crown. The centre of the wheel bears the insignia of the Club and is decorated with yellow enamel (some of which has chipped off). The reverse has a rectangular panel where originally an applied enamelled British "Union Jack" flag would have been situated. The base is stamped with the maker's name, "Elkington & Co. , London" and with the low issue number of "1879". Fair condition (some of the detail has been lost through polishing and the badge is bent slightly backwards). Currently mounted on a bakelite display base (which can easily be removed). Overall height (not including bolt or wooden base) : 140mm.
Inventory No. M-300
