Gilt bronze medal issued in 1938 by the Royal Automobile Club to commemorate the completion of the famous "London to Brighton Veteran Car Run"
The front of the medal depicts a goddess riding a winged chariot and bears the following inscription, "The Royal Automobile Club Veteran Car Run - 1938", and the reverse , "Awarded By The Royal Automobile Club For Punctual Arrival In Brighton". Diameter : 39mm. Good condition (some wear to gilding on font).
The first London to Brighton Car Run was first held on the 14th November 1896 to commemorate the passing of the Emancipation Act in British Parliament. This act raised the motoring speed limit from 4 miles per hour to 14 miles per hour and abolished the requirement to be preceded by a man on foot. Apart from a handful of years the Run has been held annually ever since. It is open to drivers from all over the world who enter cars that were built prior to 1905.
