Rare, original, gilt bronze medal awarded to A. C. lace and Ian Connell for finishing 5th in the 1938 Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy motor race.

This front of this attractive, quality medal bears the image of a winged angel surrounded by a laurel wreath and the British Royal crown. Either side is the caption, "RAC Tourist Trophy Race - 1938". The reverse is professionally hand engraved with the inscription, "A.C. Lace & I. Connell - Darracq - 5th at 67.73 mph". Diameter of medal : 51mm. Nice condition (slight wear to gilding). Comes with fitted box.

The 1938 Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy Motor Race was held at Donnington Park on the 3rd September. The race was won by Louis Gérard driving a Delage. Third, fourth and fifth places were won by Talbot-Lago (Darracq) T150Cs driven by Philippe Ètancelin, René Carrière and A.C. Lace/Ian Connell.

As well as a racing driver, A. C. Lace was also the Sales Director of the Invicta Car Company. He took part in many races driving cars including: Invicta; Darracq; and Alta. Some of races he took part in are as follows :

1933 BDRC 500 Miles Race - Brooklands (Invicta).
1933 RAC Tourist Trophy - Belfast (Invicta).
1934 JCC International Trophy Race - Belfast (Invicta).
1934 RAC Tourist Trophy - Belfast (Invicta).
1935 Mannin Mooar/Mannin Beg - Isle of Man (Alta).

Ian Connell was educated at Cambridge University and in 1935, along with Peter Monkhouse, founded the Monaco Motor and Engineering Co. Ltd. at Watford. His first motor race was the 1934 Mountain Race at held Brooklands driving an Austin. Connell bought the 1927 Bentley Le Mans winner Dr. J. D. Benjafield's ERA (R6B) and raced it during the 1937 and 1938 seasons. He drove many cars including : Austin; Singer; ERA; Alfa Romeo; Vale Special; Darracq; and Delahaye. Some of his races included :

1935 BRDC 500 Miles Race - Brooklands (Vale Special).
1936 Donnington Grand Prix - Donnington Park (6th - Alfa Romeo).
1937 Flatloppet Ice Race - Stockholm, Sweden - (2nd - ERA).
1937 Fredenloppet Ice Race - Västerås, Sweden (1st - ERA).
1937 Campbell Trophy - Brooklands (10th - ERA).
1937 Campbell Trophy (Voiturette) - Brooklands (6th - ERA).
1937 JCC 200 Mile Race - Donnington Park (ERA).
1936 Donnington Grand Prix - Donnington Park (8th - ERA).
1938 RAC Tourist Trophy Race - Donnington Park (5th - Darracq T150C).
1939 Le Mans 24h Race (8th Delehaye).
