Rare Original German Racing Car Table Lighter. c.1905 (Maker's Mark)

Very attractive, original, table cigarette lighter made in the from of an early chain driven racing car and designed to be stood in on a bar the centre of a dining table. Manufactured by the quality German maker, "Kayser" around 1905.

This rare, quality object is made from a silver plated pewter type metal (typical of the metalware produced in Germany around this period) and is beautifully modeled on an period racing car which appears to be loosely based on a "Brasier" which took part in the early Gordon Bennett races. The model is nicely stylized to give the impression of speed with the driver in an action pose and the mechanic crouched onto the car's jump step. In the centre of the spare wheel on the back of the car is a nozzle which holds a cotton wick. This nozzle unscrews to reveal a tank which holds lighter fluid or methylated spirit. The wick is designed to be lit and left to burn continually. Fitted into an aperture on the top of the car's bonnet (hood) is a wand which also holds a wick. Below this aperture is another fuel tank. Once the wand is removed (soaked in fuel), it can be ignited from the rear burner and used to light cigarettes, cigars or pipes. The base of the model is stamped with the Kayser company logo. Overall length : 184mm. Nice condition (beautiful patina to silver plating).
