"Dinky Toys" Die Cast Thunderbolt Land Speed Record Car. c.1950

Miniature diecast model of George Eyston's "Thunderbolt" land speed record car made in England around 1950 by Meccano Ltd., as part of their "Dinky Toys" series (No. 23m).

This model is still fitted with it's original tyres and is decorated with it's original silver and green paint work. Nice condition (no damage, slight wear to paint). Length : 126mm.

Captain George Eyston's Thunderbolt record car weighed seven tons, was fitted with two 12 cylinder Rolls Royce engines (producing 4700bhp) and broke the land speed record three times at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. On the 19th November 1937, Thunderbolt broke Sir Malcolm Campbell's record, reaching a speed of 311.41 mph, and on the 27th August 1938 it bettered this by achieving 345.48 mph. Less than a month later, this record was beaten by John Cobb in his Railton, only to be re-taken the day after by Eyston at 357.49 mph.
