RAF 3 Fighter Squadron

Crest bears the image of a cockatrice standing on a monolith. Motto translation :  "The third shall be the first" (No. 3 was the first squadron equipped with heavier than air machines)

No 3 Squadron, RFC, was formed at Larkhill in 1912 from No 2 (Aeroplane) Company. It was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914 to carry out reconnaissance duties. In 1917 the squadron changed to a fighter/scout unit after receiving Sopwith Camels. It was disbanded after the war and reformed in the 1920s when it flew Snipes, Woodcocks, Gamecocks and Bulldogs and was deployed to Sudan during the Abyssinian crisis in 1935. During W.W.II. it flew Hurricanes, Typhoons and Tempests (with the latter it destroyed no less than 288 V1 "flying bombs"). The squadron continued after the war flying numerous aircraft and is currently based at RAF Cottesmore.
