Rare W.W.II. RAF Mk.1 "Dark Adaptation" Goggles. 1941

Rare pair of Mk.I Royal Air Force night fighter pilot's "dark adaptation" goggles. dating from around 1941.

These simple, unlined leather goggles were designed to be worn by night fighter pilots 30 minutes before take off. Their dark lenses (no longer fitted) would help the pilot's eyes acclimatize to the darkness, giving him improved night vision from the very the beginning of the flight. Although not stamped, these goggles were made with the Air Ministry reference "22C/575". The lenses can be changed by unscrewing the steel frames. Either side of the frames are two black painted brass air vents to prevent condensation on the lenses. Currently fitted clear perspex (plexiglas) lenses (not with tinted lenses). Good condition (some wear to finish on the painted metal fittings and some stretching to adjustable elastic head strap). These goggles are illustrated in Mick Prodger's book, "Vintage Flying Helmets (Aviation Headgear Before The Jet Age).
