15ct Gold Royal Flying Corps "Sweetheart" Wings c.1914

Fine quality, W.W.I. period, solid 15ct gold "sweetheart" brooch in the form of a pair of Royal Flying Corps pilot's wings. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.
This scarce English made brooch is beautifully hand made (not cast). All detail (including fine feathers) is hand engraved. The (King's) crown is in-filled with red enamel and the letters, "RFC" are enamelled in blue and white. The back is stamped, "15ct" (this British gold standard was no longer used after 1932). The wings are mounted on a gold pin and also have a gold safety chain attached.
Overall length : 59mm. Excellent condition. Comes with a nice quality period leather jeweller's case.
The Royal Flying Corps was formed on 13th May 1912 and served through the majority of the First World War. On 1st April 1918, the RFC and the RNAS (Royal Navy Air Service) were separated from the army and the navy and merged to form a new service, the Royal Air Force.
