Very beautiful quality, original painting of the W.W.I. Royal Flying Corps fighter, the Vickers F.b.5 "Gunbus". Believed to be painted in the 1970's.
This very nice painting was commissioned to be reproduced as a book illustration (uncertain as to which publication). The aircraft (with pilot and observer/gunner) has been painted against a white background and depicts the Vickers F.B.5a (serial no. 2345) "Bombay (2)" which was the second aircraft presented to the RFC by the city of Bombay (the first being an F.E.2b). A photograph of this particular aircraft is illustrated in "Aircraft Camoflage & Markings - 1907-1954" by Bruce Robertson. Below the painting is the caption, "Vickers F.B.5 Gunbus (100 H.P. Gnome "Monosaupape" Rotary Engine), In R.F.C. Service 1915-16". This original artwork is also signed by the artist, "Keith Broomfield". Dimensions (including frame) : 575mm x 475mm. Very good condition.
Built by Vickers, the F.B.5 (Fighting Biplane) entered into service in July 1915 and was the RFC's first purpose built fighter aircraft. It's crew consisted of a pilot and an observer/gunner who manned a forward firing Lewis machine gun. Due to the fact that it was so vulnerable to attack, it was soon replaced by more advanced single seater types. The F.B.5 was later used by the RFC as a reconnaissance aircraft.
