A first day cover envelope produced in 1979 by the Royal Air Force Museum as part of their test pilot series. It commemorates Harry Hawker and is signed by the pioneer aviator and the aircraft manufacturer (Sopwith & Hawker Companies), T.O.M. Sopwith.
This cover is decorated with an image of the pioneer aviator and Sopwith Aviation Company’s test pilot, Harry G Hawker and also bears the genuine signature of Sir Thomas Sopwith. It was flown from Melbourne to London Heathrow in British Airways Boeing 747 (G-BDXH). Then to commemorate Harry Hawker’s connection with the Sopwith & Hawker Aircraft Companies, it was re-flown in the RAF 79 Sqn’s Hawker Hunter Mk 6A (XK141) and Hawker Siddeley Hawk (XX279), both from R.A.F. Brawdy. Affixed to the cover are two Australian postage stamps, one featuring Harry Hawker. It has been marked with the following hand stamps: “British Airways Concord Project Co-ordinator - Received 17 Jun 1979” and “No 79 Squadron R.A.F. Brawdy - 21 Aug 1979”. The reverse also has been stamped and signed by Flt. Lt. F.W. Waters RAF of the Royal Air Force Museum certifying that this cover bears Sopwith’s genuine signature. The envelope contains a photographic postcard and information card of Harry Hawker (envelope flap partially sealed). Nice condition.
