Rare pair of Royal Air Force night
fighter pilot's Mk.I dark
adaptation' goggles. Dating from around 1941.
These goggles were designed to be
worn by night fighter pilots thirty minutes before take off. Their dark red
lenses would help the pilot's eyes acclimatize to the darkness, giving him
improved night vision from the very the beginning of the flight. These leather goggles are fitted
with red laminated lenses and are stamped (across the bridge) with the Air
Ministry reference "A.M. - 22C/575". The lenses can be changed by unscrewing the
steel frames. Either side of the frames are two metal air vents, designed to
prevent the build up of condensation on the lenses. Nice condition.
These
goggles are illustrated in Mick Prodger's book, "Vintage Flying Helmets
(Aviation Headgear Before The Jet Age).
