Genuine W.W.I. Trench Art Aeroplane Model. 1916Genuine W.W.I. Trench Art Aeroplane Model. 1916Genuine W.W.I. Trench Art Aeroplane Model. 1916

Genuine W.W.I. period ‘trench art’ model made in the form of two-seater biplane. Originally belonging to Staff Sergeant William Nutt of the Army Ordnance Corps. Dated 1916.

Trench art items such as this were manufactured by both soldiers and locals using brass from spent rifle and artillery shell cases. The locals would sell the pieces to the troops as souvenirs.

This very nice item of trench art is hand made using brass rifle and artillery cartridge cases which have been soldered together in the form of an airplane. The top and bottom of the base is hand inscribed (scratched) with the following inscription, “A/S/S W. Nutt, France 1916” (A/S/S = Armourer Staff Sergeant). Wingspan: 104mm. Good condition (nice aged patina). Comes with a copy of S/Sergeant Nutt’s medal index card.

Research has found that William Nutt served throughout W.W.I. with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. The R.A.O.C. dealt with the supply and maintenance of weaponry, munitions and other military equipment. At the beginning of the war his rank was Armourer Sergeant and he landed in France on the 12th September 1915. At the end of the war he held the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-15 Star.
