Attractive French plate decorated with a humorous early aviation cartoon by J Peoriot. Dating from around 1910.
This charming plate is entitled, "Le Monde Oiseau - Le Chasseur Myope (The Bird World - The Short-sighted Hunter) and is marked with the number "12", suggesting that it is part of a series. The centre of this plate is decorated with a printed image of a comical aviation scene (signed, "J Peoriot") which depicts an early monoplane flying over cliffs, out to sea (which resembles Hubert Latham's Antoinette) and two hunters, one of which is aiming his rifle at the aircraft. Below is the inscription, Crebleu…la belle mouette! – Ne tirez pas! C’est un aeroplane qui traverse la Manche" which translates as, "My Goodness...a beautiful gull! - Do not draw! It is an aeroplane crossing the English Channel.". The rim is decorated with an attractive lilac colour with a scalloped pattern in relief. The reverse bears the maker's mark, "Digoin & Sarreguemines". Diameter : 210mm. Good condition (slight discolouration to background).
