Rotol Airscrews was formed in 1937 as a joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Bristol ("ROlls-Royce" and "BrisTOL"). The company was created especially to develop and manufacture propellers for both companies, as the the market was considered too small to justify more than one business. The company had an excellent reputation and their designs were considered to be cutting edge. During W.W.II., they manufactured innovative variable-pitch propellers for several aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. In 1960, Rotol Ltd merged with Dowty Equipment Ltd to form Dowty Rotol Ltd.
