Attractive sterling silver ashtray with engine turned decoration. The raised centre is beautifully decorated with an image of a Hawker Hunter jet fighter in flight and is finished in black, blue and white enamel. The underside is stamped with a full English sterling silver hallmark which corresponds to the year 1955 and with the maker's mark, "T & S" (Turner & Simpson Ltd., Birmingham). Diameter: 137mm. Good condition (a couple of slight marks).

The very successful Hawker Hunter was designed by Sidney Camm (the designer of many Hawker aircraft including the Hurricane). The prototype was first flown on 20th July 1951 by the the famous W.W.II. ace (28 victories) and early jet test pilot, Neville Duke. On the 7th September 1953 he set a new air speed record of 727.62 mph flying a Hunter. It entered service with the Royal Air Force in July 1954 and over the years was modified many times. It served with the air forces of no less than 19 countries.
