Genuine Autograph of Charles Turner Hughes. 1933

Genuine signed photographic postcard of the famous British aerobatic and test pilot, Charles Turner-Hughes. Dating from 1933.

This original photographic postcard was signed by Turner Hughes during his time working as stunt pilot for Sir Alan Cobham's 'National Aviation Display' touring air show (more popularly known as 'Cobham's Flying Circus'). The card bears an image of him dressed in flying gear with helmet and goggles accompanied by the caption, "Ft. Lieut. C. Turner Hughes - The Famous Upside Down Flyer and Stunter". His autograph is signed in black ink. This postcard was originally sent through the post. The top portion of the card still has the original postage stamps attached, franked with the date "12 May 1933" (amongst the George V stamps is a Queen Victoria 1d lilac - collectors items in their own right!).  Dimensions : 90mm x 130mm. Very good condition.

Charles Turner-Hughes started his flying career when he took a short-service commission in the Royal Air Force and learnt to fly at No. 5 Flying Training School, RAF Sealand. On qualifying for his wings, he was posted to No. 56 Squadron and in 1930, was transferred to No. 24 (Communications) Squadron. When his commission came to an end in 1931, he left the Service and joined Caribbean Airways in Jamaica. After six months he returned to England and joined Sir Alan Cobham's 'National Aviation Display'. He specialised in aerobatic and low inverted flying in a DeHavilland Tiger Moth, performing six times a day, seven days a week. He remained with Cobham's Flying Circus for two years, after which he became the No.2 test pilot for the Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company, under Alan Campbell-Orde. When Campbell-Orde left the company in 1936, Turner Hughes took the position of chief test pilot and held this post until 1946.
