Rare, W.W.I. period, U.S. made, 10ct gold
sweetheart brooch in the form of an early aeroplane propeller. Dating from
around 1918.
Brooches such as these were known as
"sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.
Styled in the form of an early propeller,
this brooch is made from solid 10K gold and the centre is decorated with the
United States Army Air
Service aeroplane insignia in red, white and
blue enamel (only used between Jan. 1918 & May. 1919 - see note below). The
reverse is stamped '10K' (on clasp). Length : 38.5mm. Very good condition
condition.
Comes with a period jewellers box.
The United States Army Air Service was established on
May 24, 1918 replacing the 'Aviation Section of the U.S. Signal Corps',
which had been the nation's air force since 1914. The service continued
until July 2, 1926 when it became the United States Army Air Corps.
Shortly after U.S.A. entered W.W.I. the
aircraft insignia used by the United States Army Air Service serving in Europe
was changed from its original design (a white star with a red centre within a
blue circle) to a roundel similar to that used by its allies, Britain & France.
The only difference being an alternative sequence of colours. The reason for
this change is that it was felt the new insignia would be more easily recognisable during
combat. The USAAS continued to use this design for the remainder of the war
and in May 1919 it reverted back to its original 'star-in-circle' insignia.
