Rare and unusual W.W.I. period, English sterling silver desk calendar decorated with a biplane design. Made by William Hutton & Sons in 1918.
Nice quality item. Solid sterling silver body with an applied hand cut and engraved Royal Flying Corps biplane design. The calendar holds a series of cards which are printed with the day, date and month and can changed accordingly to display the correct combination (cards appear to be modern replacements). The base is stamped with a full English sterling silver hallmark corresponding to the year 1918 and with the maker's mark, "W.H & Ss Ld" (William Hutton & Sons Ltd, Sheffield, England). The base is weighted and is still fitted with it original protective felt (slight wear). Base width: 63.5mm, Aeroplane wingspan: 82mm. Nice condition.
This firm of silversmiths was established in Birmingham in 1800 by William Hutton, and relocated to Sheffield in 1832. The name was changed to William Hutton & Sons in 1864 and in 1893 it became a limited company. The business closed in 1930.
