Rare, French made brooch decorated with an image of a Wright Flyer aeroplane and likely to be made as a souvenir of the French town Wimereux. Dating from around 1908.
Applied to the front of this oval, silver plated brooch is a detailed image of a Wright Brother’s ‘Wright Flyer’ aeroplane. Above this is engraved the name of the town, Wimereux. The back is fitted with a brooch pin. Length : 37mm. Nice condition. Supplied with a modern presentation box.
Wimereux is a town on the French coast, close to Boulogne. In 1908, Captain Louis Ferdinand Ferber made attempts to fly in Wimereux. He few nearly a kilometre, reaching a height of 150 metres. In September 1909, he flew from Boulogne to Wimereux and back. On his return he was killed when he crashed on landing.
