W.W.I. Period Sterling Silver Royal Naval Air Service "Sweetheart" Brooch

Good quality, W.W.I. period, sterling silver and enamel sweetheart brooch in the form of a RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) eagle. Dating from around 1915. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.

Nicely modelled brooch decorated with blue enamel. Above the eagle are the letters "RNAS". The back is stamped, "sterling silver" and is fitted with a brooch pin. Length : 40mm. Nice condition. Supplied with a modern presentation box.

The Royal Naval Air Service was formed on 1st July 1914 in order to give air support to the Royal Navy. It evolved out of the previous Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps which was formed on 13th April 1912. As well as patrolling it's coastline, the RNAS was also responsible for the air defence of Britain during the early part of W.W.I. On 1st April 1918, the RNAS and the RFC were separated from the army and the navy and merged to form a new service, the Royal Air Force.
