W.W.II. Period Sterling Silver Fleet Air Arm "Sweetheart" Wings

Good quality, sterling silver sweetheart brooch in the form of a pair of Fleet Air Arm pilot's wings, dating from the 1940s. These brooches were known as "sweethearts" as they were purchased by airmen to give to their loved ones.
This brooch has white enamel wings, a Royal Navy anchor in front of a blue enamel background and a red enamel "King's" crown. The back is fitted with a brooch pin. Length : 54mm. Nice condition. Supplied with a modern presentation box.
The Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force was formed on the 1st April 1924 and has continued in service ever since. Between 24th May 1939 (when the Royal Navy regained control of naval aviation) and 1953 it's official name was changed (but not commonly used) to the Air Branch of the Royal Navy.
